Philosophe français, fils d'immigrés juifs russes, agrégé de philosophie (reçu premier en 1926). Il enseigne à Toulouse puis Lille, est privé de son poste sous l'Occupation, et occupe la chaire de philosophie morale de la Sorbonne de 1951 à 1979. Auteur d'une œuvre morale et esthétique majeure, il refusa jusqu'à sa mort de participer à tout colloque en Allemagne.
