Ethnographe et écrivain russe né à Ovroutch dans la famille d'un instituteur juif. Révolutionnaire exilé, il devint célèbre pour ses études des Tchouktches de Sibérie, menées notamment pour l'American Museum of Natural History. Il publia aussi de la fiction et de la poésie sous le pseudonyme « Tan », dont des textes évoquant le monde juif (Silhouettes de Gomel').
