רעגיסטער געשיכטע · באַהיטער, נישט באַזיצער
Né à Berlin dans une famille juive, critique de théâtre dès son adolescence. En 1905 il fonde la revue Die Schaubühne, qu'il rebaptise Die Weltbühne en 1918 et dirige jusqu'à sa mort — l'un des grands organes de la gauche intellectuelle indépendante de la République de Weimar. Sans être sioniste, il combattait l'assimilation et le « camouflage » juif.
