Né Kamal Salah à Bagdad en 1926 dans une famille juive séculière de commerçants, il rejoint à 15 ans un mouvement clandestin de gauche ; condamné à mort par contumace, il fuit et arrive en Israël en 1949. Écrivant en hébreu, il traite du sort commun des Juifs et des Arabes (romans Victoria, Refuge/חסות, Une poignée de brouillard). Lauréat de nombreux prix, il préside à partir de 2001 l'Association pour les droits civiques en Israël (ACRI). Mort le 1er avril 2024.
