Mathématicien soviétique juif, l'une des grandes figures de l'école soviétique d'analyse fonctionnelle. Il crée dans les années 1930 un centre d'analyse fonctionnelle à l'université d'Odessa. Sa carrière fut entravée par des discriminations antisémites (perte d'un poste en 1952). Lauréat du prix Wolf de mathématiques en 1982, qu'il ne fut pas autorisé à venir recevoir. Il a une notice dans l'encyclopédie YIVO.
