Né à Constantinople en 1873 dans une famille juive russe assimilée et prospère, petit-fils d'Alexandre Zederbaum. Théoricien social-démocrate, il devient le principal dirigeant de la fraction menchevik du POSDR. Auteur de nombreux écrits politiques, dont ses mémoires (« Notes d'un social-démocrate »).
