Écrivain tchèque d'origine juive né en Bohême en 1900. Docteur en littérature comparée et philologie slave (Université de Prague, 1928). Il échappa à la déportation en simulant sa mort et en vivant dans la clandestinité. Après-guerre, il travailla au Musée juif de Prague et contribua à l'histoire des Juifs de Bohême. Ses romans « Život s hvězdou » (La vie avec une étoile, 1949) et « Na střeše je Mendelssohn » (Mendelssohn est sur le toit) comptent parmi les premières œuvres tchèques sur la Shoah.
