Né à Alexandrie le 24 décembre 1902 dans l'aristocratie de la communauté juive d'Égypte (fils du baron Félix de Menasce, chef de la communauté juive d'Alexandrie). Polyglotte, il devint un iranologue de premier plan, spécialiste des textes pehlevis et de la littérature zoroastrienne, directeur d'études à l'EPHE (1949–1970). Il consacra près de vingt ans au Dēnkart.
