Né à Fürth dans une modeste famille juive de commerçants, il devient l'un des romanciers allemands les plus lus et les plus traduits de l'entre-deux-guerres. Ami de Rainer Maria Rilke et de Thomas Mann. Son essai autobiographique « Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude » (1921) analyse la tension entre ses identités allemande et juive. Ses livres seront brûlés en public par les nazis.
