Mathématicien français, il démontre en 1896 (indépendamment de Charles-Jean de La Vallée Poussin) le théorème des nombres premiers. Son nom reste attaché aux matrices de Hadamard et à plusieurs théorèmes d'analyse. Engagé dans le camp dreyfusard (la femme de Dreyfus était fille d'un cousin de son père), il perdit deux fils à la Grande Guerre et dut fuir aux États-Unis pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
