Née à Odessa en 1899, figure majeure du théâtre yiddish, directrice de troupes (dont le Théâtre juif d'État de Pologne). Elle traduisit et adapta des dizaines de pièces en yiddish, en écrivit deux, et publia son autobiographie My Life, My Theatre (1973). Nommée à l'Oscar pour The Shop on Main Street (1965).
