Introduction
Il est des existences qui traversent le vingtième siècle comme un fil ténu mais ininterrompu, reliant les salons intellectuels de la Vienne d'avant-guerre aux amphithéâtres d'une petite université de Virginie. Celle de Herta Freitag, née Taussig, appartient à cette catégorie. Mathématicienne austro-américaine, elle vécut de décembre 1908 à janvier 2000, quatre-vingt-onze années qui enjambèrent deux continents, deux guerres mondiales et plusieurs vies professionnelles successives [MacTutor, 2016]. Derrière la notice concise du dictionnaire — spécialiste des nombres de Fibonacci, professeure à Hollins College — se dissimule un destin façonné par la persécution, l'exil et une passion tenace pour l'enseignement.
Née dans la Vienne impériale finissante, formée à l'Université de Vienne, elle appartint à cette génération de Juifs viennois dont la trajectoire fut brutalement déviée par l'Anschluss de 1938. Son père, Josef Heinrich Israel Taussig, rédacteur en chef à la Neue Freie Presse, avait pris position publiquement contre la montée du nazisme, ce qui précipita le sort de la famille au lendemain du 11 mars 1938 [MacTutor, 2016 ; nouvelle pièce : « Le père d'Herta Freitag, rédacteur viennois révoqué après l'Anschluss »]. Herta prit le chemin de l'Angleterre puis des États-Unis, où elle refit sa vie et sa carrière dans les conditions de l'exil, avant de s'imposer comme l'une des voix les plus fidèles du monde international des mathématiques fibonacci. Son parcours illustre ce qu'a représenté l'apport des réfugiés juifs d'Europe centrale à la vie scientifique et universitaire américaine — un phénomène que l'historiographie de la migration juive a longuement documenté [Diner, 2001]. Ce livre entend restituer, à partir des sources disponibles, la double appartenance d'une femme qui fut à la fois enfant de la culture juive viennoise et figure respectée des mathématiques américaines.
