Born in Essaouira, he became the great historian of Jewish culture in Islamic lands, particularly in Morocco. Author of about fifteen works and more than 150 articles (Jewish pedagogy, taqqanot and responsa, kabbalah), corresponding member of the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco. His work founded the scholarly study of a thousand (then two thousand) years of Jewish life in Morocco.
