Né dans le Mellah (quartier juif) de Marrakech, rabbin de nationalité française. Docteur d'État en histoire (sur la pensée juive médiévale, œuvre de Rabbi Nissim de Marseille) et docteur en psychologie clinique (Paris-Descartes), il mena de front une carrière rabbinique de plus de soixante ans et une carrière universitaire. Il est nommé Grand Rabbin du Consistoire de France en 2019.
