Juriste italo-américain, doyen de la Yale Law School (1985-1994) puis juge fédéral à la Cour d'appel du deuxième circuit, figure majeure du courant « law and economics ». Sa mère est issue d'une famille juive italienne ; ses parents, actifs dans la résistance antifasciste, ont fui l'Italie pour les États-Unis en 1939.
