Né de parents juifs pauvres et pieux à Vilna, il étudie à Breslau (avec l'appui d'Abraham Geiger) puis devient professeur de langues orientales à l'université de Saint-Pétersbourg (1855) après s'être converti au christianisme. Sémitisant réputé, il publie sur les Sabéens, les inscriptions syriaques et la stèle de Mésha, et défend les Juifs contre les accusations de crime rituel.
