Né à Liocourt en Lorraine, d'abord destiné au rabbinat, il devint philosophe sous le patronage de Victor Cousin et fut le premier juif français agrégé de philosophie. Professeur au Collège de France (chaire de droit de la nature et des gens, 1854–1881). Spécialiste de la mystique juive.
