Né Duarte Lopez à Lisbonne dans une famille de conversos qui pratiquait le judaïsme en secret sous l'Inquisition. Émigré à Newport en 1752, il y reprend le nom d'Aaron et pratique ouvertement le judaïsme. Il devint le marchand le plus riche de Newport (bougies de spermaceti, baleine, rhum, navigation), soutien de la synagogue Touro. Sa correspondance et ses livres de comptes forment un fonds d'archives majeur sur le commerce juif de l'Amérique coloniale.
