Assault and rape during a burglary targeting a couple designated as Jewish

A Jewish couple is attacked at their home in Créteil by burglars who had identified them as such, on the supposed grounds that Jews would possess money. The young woman is raped in front of her partner while the attackers demand the access code to a safe.

The affair marked the French community because it stemmed neither from organized terrorism nor from political provocation, but from a street prejudice turned into a method of targeting: this was already the mechanism behind the kidnapping and murder of Ilan Halimi, a few years earlier in the Paris region. Créteil, home to one of the most significant Jewish communities in the suburbs, subsequently witnessed a movement of departures toward Israel and toward other neighborhoods.
