Har Nof is a neighborhood in western Jerusalem populated predominantly by ultra-Orthodox families, many of whom came from English-speaking countries. On the morning of November 18, 2014, two residents of East Jerusalem entered the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue during Sha'harit prayers, armed with cleavers and a handgun, and struck the worshippers at prayer, their ritual shawls on their shoulders. A Druze police officer who was first to respond died of his wounds. The attack, which occurred during a period of tension surrounding the Temple Mount, struck a population previously removed from the political conflict and brought about a lasting tightening of security around places of worship in Jerusalem.
