The port of Sušak, neighbor to Fiume, had welcomed refugees in the Italian zone: all are rounded up when the region passes under German control.
Sušak, the port neighboring Fiume and separated from it by a mere frontier stream, lay within the zone held by the Italian army. Its Jewish community, swelled by refugees from Croatia and Bosnia seeking shelter in that zone, lived there under a regime of surveillance and house arrest, but without deportations: the Italian military authorities refused to hand these Jews over to the Ustasha regime. Many were interned on an Adriatic island. When Italy capitulated and German troops occupied the coast, the Jewish inhabitants of Sušak and the refugees who had remained there were rounded up and deported.
