The former tile factory of the Bouches-du-Rhône serves as a gathering center for convoys leaving the unoccupied zone.
The old Les Milles tile factory, near Aix-en-Provence, has served since the defeat as an internment camp and then as a transit camp. At the end of summer, the Vichy authorities gather there the foreign Jews handed over from the unoccupied zone, in fulfillment of a promise made to the Germans. Convoys depart from there to Drancy, from where the internees will be deported. The camp had sheltered anti-Nazi German artists and intellectuals, refugees in France who were then interned as enemy nationals; some were still there.
