Liquidation of the Sieradz ghetto

Sieradz, an ancient castle town on the Warta, annexed to the Reich, was home to a Jewish community documented since the Middle Ages, whose members lived by trade and craftsmanship. From the very first months of the occupation, the synagogue was desecrated and the inhabitants subjected to forced requisitions. They were then confined in an enclosed quarter established around the former monastery. In the summer, the occupier emptied this quarter: the inhabitants were gathered, sorted on the spot, and the vast majority were transported to the extermination center of Chełmno nad Nerem, while a minority was retained for forced labor.
