Oil-producing town in the Carpathians whose community is led in summer to the Bełżec extermination camp.
Gorlice, at the foot of the Low Beskids, was home to a renowned Hassidic community and a Jewish population employed in the oil wells of the region. Under the occupation, forced labor preceded confinement in a reduced quarter, into which Jews from neighboring towns were driven. In the summer, the liquidation operation unfolded in two stages: a first group was shot in the forest of Garbacz, on the outskirts of the city, the rest led toward Bełżec. The last men, held back to clean the quarter, were sent to the camps of the region. The Hassidic court of Gorlice disappeared along with its community.
