The Ariège camp, opened for Spanish Republicans, delivers its Jewish internees to the convoys of summer.
Opened for Republican fighters who had fled Spain, the camp of Vernet d'Ariège subsequently received foreigners deemed undesirable, among them many Jews from Central Europe. At the end of the summer, the Vichy administration carried out roundups of foreign Jews there, who were handed over to the occupier; the convoys made their way to Drancy. The camp would remain in the Memory of its internees as one of the harshest in France, on account of the cold, the hunger, and the forced labor.
