The Jews of Vinkovci, in western Syrmia, are stripped by racial decrees, then arrested in successive waves and sent to the camps of the Ustaše regime.
Vinkovci, a railway hub in western Syrmia, had a large Jewish community active in the grain and timber trade. Annexed to the Ustasha state, the city immediately enforced the racial decrees: mandatory declaration of property, seizure of businesses, distinctive insignia, and prohibition from certain public spaces. Men were rounded up in groups during the summer and sent to the camps the regime was opening in Slavonia; women, children, and the elderly followed during the winter. The community of Vinkovci, one of the largest in eastern Slavonia, was almost entirely annihilated.
