Massacre of Slonim

Slonim, a town in western Polesie, endured several successive "actions": an initial mass shooting in the summer, followed by the liquidation of the greater part of the ghetto in the autumn, carried out by the security police and auxiliaries, in pits prepared on the outskirts of the town. The survivors were held in a labor ghetto.

It was there that one of the first Jewish resistance groups in the forests of Belorussia took shape: fighters escaped with weapons recovered from the workshops and joined the partisans of the Lipiczany forest. Slonim thus stands as one of the places where destruction and armed resistance intersect — two histories that were long written apart from each other.
