On the fourth day of July, the great choral synagogue of Riga was set on fire with Jews locked inside. The other synagogues of the city burned the same day.
The fire was the work of a Latvian auxiliary commando operating under German control. Riga would witness, at the end of that year, the mass shootings in the forest of Rumbula, among the deadliest of the entire operation, in which the inhabitants of the great ghetto as well as convoys from Germany were murdered.
