The Shoah (1939–1945)

Liquidation of the Polotsk Ghetto

Nov.-déc. 1941·Polotsk

Toll
plusieurs milliers

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The ghetto is liquidated and its inhabitants shot in pits in the surrounding area.

Polotsk is one of the oldest Jewish communities in Belarus. After the occupation, its Jewish inhabitants were gathered into a closed quarter established in the suburb, where cold and hunger claimed victims even before the executions began.

The liquidation took place in late autumn, in pits dug on the outskirts of the city. The pre-war records and the testimonies collected after the liberation do not agree closely enough for a precise count to have been established.
