Capture of the city in the Deluge wars
1657·Brest-Litovsk
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
the community massacred
The community of Brest-Litovsk was massacred during the capture of the city in the wars of the Deluge.
Brest was one of the five leading communities of Lithuania and sat on the Council of the Land. Its destruction, like that of Vilna two years earlier, completed the ruin of the autonomous organization of Judaism in the Republic: the communities emerged from these wars crushed by debts contracted to pay ransoms, and this indebtedness would weigh upon them throughout the following century.
