In May, after the death of a police officer killed by a Jewish butcher during a checkpoint, the city of Brest-Litovsk was given over to the crowd for an entire day. Jewish shops and homes were ransacked.
The community of Brest made up more than half of the city's population. The extent of the ransacking and the passivity of the police throughout the day would be debated in the Polish Sejm. As elsewhere during those years, the individual incident served as a pretext for collective violence that a boycott propaganda campaign had already prepared.
