The Shoah (1939–1945)

Obeliai shooting

25 août 1941·Obeliai

Toll
plus d'un millier de morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The community of the small border town, swollen with Jews rounded up from neighboring farms, is annihilated in one morning at the edge of pits dug in a nearby wood; the auxiliary police of the district lend a hand.

In Obeliai, a small town in northeastern Lithuania near the Latvian border, the men are separated during the first days of the occupation and held in a barn; the women and children join them a few weeks later. The final assembly takes place under the pretext of a transfer to a work site, then the columns are led toward a nearby forest. The executions are carried out by a mobile detachment from Kaunas, assisted by auxiliaries recruited locally.
