On the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth days of August, the community of Tykocin, one of the oldest in Podlachia, is led into the forest of Łopuchowo and shot over two days.
The baroque synagogue of Tykocin, built in the 17th century, survived the destruction of its community and serves today as a museum. This disproportion — a building intact, no one left to pray within it — is that of hundreds of small towns in eastern Poland, and it defines what travelers still find there.
