The Shoah (1939–1945)

Massacre of Zarasai

26 août 1941·Zarasai

Toll
~2 500 morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The Jews of the town of lakes and surrounding localities are gathered and then shot in a single day, with a few political prisoners added to the column.

Zarasai, on the shores of the lakes in the northeast, serves as a gathering point for Jews from the surrounding towns, brought there over a period of weeks. At the end of August, all are led out of the town and shot in a single day by the mobile detachment supported by Lithuanian auxiliaries. The surrounding communities, emptied beforehand, disappear along with that of the town.
