At the confluence of the Neman and the Merkys, the Jews of the town are led out of the locality and shot; the old Jewish cemetery remained the sole witness to their presence.
Merkinė, at the confluence of the Merkys and the Niémen, was home to a community attested for centuries. In September, its Jews are gathered in the market square, led to the Jewish cemetery, and shot at the edge of a pit. Some inhabitants attempt to flee into the forests of the Dzūkija; most are recaptured in the days that follow.
