The Shoah (1939–1945)

Massacre of Dubossary

12-14 septembre 1941·Dubossary

Toll
~6 000 morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

The community of this city on the Dniestr, one of the oldest in the region, is annihilated in three days: the inhabitants are locked in barns then led in columns to anti-tank ditches, where a mobile detachment and gendarmes who came with the occupier's allied army shoot them. The city had already experienced a notorious pogrom at the beginning of the century.

Dubossary, on the left bank of the Dniestr, had a considerable Jewish population and was one of the first towns in the region to be reached by the execution units. The inhabitants were gathered over several days, locked in tobacco warehouses, then led in columns toward nearby ravines where the pits had been prepared. Some of the synagogues were set on fire with inhabitants inside. The killing opened the series of massacres in the province.
