The Shoah (1939–1945)

Massacre of Alytus

9 sept. 1941·Alytus

Toll
~1 300 morts

The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.

What remained of the community, after summer arrests, is led to the Vidzgiris woods, above the Niemen, and shot.

Alytus, on the Niémen, sees its Jews gathered from the very first weeks of the occupation, the men shot separately during the summer. At the beginning of September, the women and children still held are led to the nearby woods and killed in turn. The community, one of the oldest in southern Lithuania, ceases to exist.
