The Jews of Liepāja are led to the sand dunes by the sea and shot over three days; photographs taken clandestinely by a German officer were found after the war.
Port on the Baltic open to Courland, Liepāja was home to an ancient community whose great synagogue was a landmark of the city. After the occupation, the Jews were registered, stripped of their possessions, then led in successive waves to the coastal dunes where they were shot. The survivors were confined in a cramped ghetto before being transferred to a camp in the province.
