Liepāja (in German Libau) is a major port in Courland (western Latvia), one of the first cities in the region to have granted Jews the right of residence as early as the 17th century. The Jewish community, which numbered several thousand at the beginning of the 20th century, was active in maritime trade, industry, and the liberal professions. In December 1941, the SS and their Latvian auxiliaries massacred approximately 2,700 Jews in the dunes of Skede, on the coast.
