Former capital of the grand-dukes where the community had its renowned yeshiva, Navahroudak sees its Jews gathered in the courthouse square, sorted, and for the most part led to the ditches of the outlying areas.
Navahroudak, once the capital of the grand dukes of Lithuania, was home to a community that had given Jewish Lithuania several of its masters and its celebrated school of moral thought. The Jews of the city were confined to an enclosed quarter, then led through successive selections toward the pits in the surrounding area; the last artisans dug an underground tunnel and some of them managed to reach the forests.
