Jasenovac is the largest Ustasha camp. Serbs, Jews, and Roma are murdered there, and it operates until the spring of the final year of the war, longer than any German camp in Eastern Europe.

Its particular character lies in its administration: there are no gas chambers; the killings are carried out with bladed weapons and mallets, by Croatian personnel. This is what has made its toll so difficult to establish and so contested — the figures advanced have varied enormously depending on the era and national interests, and the debate is not closed.
