Massacres of Daugavpils
Août-nov. 1941·Daugavpils
The toll is reproduced exactly as the source states it — never rounded, never added to another. Tolls overlap from one event to the next.
Mass shootings.
Daugavpils, a city in Latgale where Jews formed a considerable share of the population, was seized in the very first days of the invasion. The shootings were carried out by Einsatzgruppe A and above all by the Latvian auxiliaries of the Arājs commando, in the Pogulanka park and in the ditches of the fortress; they continued in waves until autumn, interspersed with selections in the ghetto established within the citadel.
The comprehensive report written by Stahlecker for Einsatzgruppe A, with its maps and its coffin symbols drawn by region, makes Latvia one of the territories most thoroughly documented by the perpetrators themselves. Daugavpils appears among the cities where the work was declared completed before the end of the year.
