Pope Gregory XIII subjected the Jews of Rome to the jurisdiction of the Inquisition for blasphemy and for the protection of apostates.

What had begun as a practice was now becoming a right: the Holy Office could henceforth bring proceedings against Jews, seize their books, imprison them, and condemn them. That same year, another bull renewed the prohibition on Jewish physicians treating Christians, a prohibition that the popes themselves had always violated by taking Jewish physicians into their service.
