The Portuguese Holy Office, established shortly before, held its first auto-da-fé in Lisbon.
Portugal had obtained from Rome, after fifteen years of negotiations and resistance from the New Christians, the establishment of a tribunal on the Spanish model. For two and a half centuries it would pursue the descendants of those forcibly baptized in fourteen ninety-seven, reaching as far as the colonies of Brazil and the Indies.
