Riots broke out against the New Christians in Évora, in the wake of the Lisbon massacre.

The Lisbon massacre, that year, had lasted three days; crowds had turned upon the converts at the call of Dominicans who accused them of being the cause of plague and drought. The king had the ringleaders and the two friars executed, and granted the New Christians the freedom to leave the kingdom — a freedom he subsequently revoked.
