the Jewish community plundered during the uprising against Leonor Teles
The death of Ferdinand I opened a succession crisis in Portugal. The regent Léonor Teles, considered aligned with the Castilian faction, was overthrown by a popular uprising in Lisbon; amid the disorder, the crowd turned on the Jewish quarter, reputed to be linked to the court, and looted it.
Jean d'Avis, Master of Aviz and future king, put an end to the violence and subsequently confirmed the privileges of the communities, whose support he needed for the finances and administration of the kingdom. Portugal would remain, for more than a century still, the land of refuge toward which Jews expelled from Castile and Aragon would turn.
