Un chaudronnier arrêté pour vol déclara avoir dérobé un ciboire dans une église de la Marche et vendu les hosties à un Juif de Spandau. Sur cette seule déposition, l'électeur Joachim Iᵉʳ de Brandebourg fit arrêter une centaine de personnes dans toute la principauté. Trente-huit furent brûlés au Neuer Markt de Berlin, quelques-uns décapités après avoir accepté le baptême ; les autres furent chassés, et les Juifs interdits de séjour dans le Brandebourg.

L'affaire connut une fin rare. Une génération plus tard, à la diète de Francfort-sur-l'Oder, Josel de Rosheim obtint qu'elle fût rouverte devant l'électeur suivant : Philippe Melanchthon y exposa que le chaudronnier avait rétracté ses aveux avant de mourir et que la confession sur laquelle tout reposait avait été extorquée. Joachim II reconnut l'erreur et autorisa le retour.
