An accusation brought against Jews of Majorca — that they had parodied the crucifixion on a Muslim slave — put the community of Palma before the choice of baptism or the stake. It converted en masse.
Judaism then ceased to exist publicly on the island, fifty years before the expulsion from the peninsula. The converts and their descendants nonetheless remained apart: designated by the name *Xuetes*, identified by some fifteen family names, they were excluded from marriages, confraternities and public offices until the twentieth century, long after the Inquisition had ceased to pursue them.
The great Majorcan autos-da-fé of the late seventeenth century struck their descendants. The rabbinate of Israel recognized in 2011 the Jewishness of the Xuetes who wish to reclaim it.
