It was from Enns, in Upper Austria, that the accusation of host desecration originated — the accusation that became the Wiener Gesera and swept away the communities of the entire duchy.
It was claimed that a woman from the city had sold to a Jew of Enns consecrated hosts stolen from a church. Duke Albert V had the Jews of all his lands arrested on the same day, their property and debts seized, and proceedings brought against them; the affair lasted more than a year and ended with the pyres of Vienna.
