In Spire, the community was destroyed, the houses plundered, and the bodies of the dead thrown into the Rhine in emptied wine barrels.

Spire had received, in the eleventh century, the most celebrated charter of protection in German Judaism: the bishop had invited the Jews there to enhance the honor of his city, guaranteeing them their walls, their cemetery, and their own justice. This charter had served as a model throughout the Empire. It counted for nothing that year.
